I support this proposed rule allowing joint registration of National Firearms Act (NFA) items for spouses. The current process often requires married couples to establish legal trusts primarily so both spouses may lawfully possess or access an NFA-regulated item. For many ordinary households, this adds unnecessary cost, complexity, paperwork, and confusion without providing a meaningful public safety benefit. Allowing spouses to jointly register NFA items directly is a practical modernization of the process. It reduces administrative burden on applicants while still preserving the existing background check and approval requirements already associated with NFA applications. This proposal would simplify compliance for law-abiding gun owners, reduce reliance on legal workarounds such as trusts created solely for shared household possession, and better reflect how married couples commonly share responsibility for lawfully owned property. I appreciate ATF’s effort to modernize and streamline this area of regulation while maintaining accountability and lawful oversight.
