Summary: A local gun shop owner in Ohio opposes the proposed rule, arguing that direct shipping will harm small businesses and increase the risk of straw purchases. The commenter contends that face-to-face transactions are necessary for proper screening, safety education, and preventing illegal sales.
Under this rule, no one ever has to say yes to a gun sale. As a shop owner in Ohio, I see the danger this poses to small businesses. We provide a vital service by meeting customers face-to-face, which stops straw purchases that a video call cannot catch. We screen all prospective purchases for many potential issues not the lest of which is safety. Face to face transfers also allow us to help educate customers. Allowing direct shipping will move business to big online sellers who can cut prices, leaving local shops to fail. While the current NFA process works because it requires government approval, this new rule asks for nothing but a wait time. Please strike these direct-shipping rules for standard guns from the final plan.
