Before I retired, I worked for 8 years as teacher & 15+ years as a police officer. I am a recreational shooter. Currently, firearms are one of the top or the top cause of death and injury in children. Children gain access to these firearms because they are improperly stored. On April 03, 2026, a 4 yr old in Houston, TX accidentally shot a 2 yr old sibling with an improperly stored firearm & therefore accessible to a child. On Oct. 21, 2024, either a 3 yr old or a 2 yr old accidentally killed a 11 month old infant in a SUV in San Antonio, TX. The firearm in this case was an AR-15 styled rifle that was improperly stored. Also, school shooters often obtain the firearms used from their home, relatives or friends. Often these firearms are also poorly stored. As a former police officer, I can tell you that the loss of a child is highly traumatic & has long lasting effects on the family & friends of the child. Remember we often describe children as priceless & our future. We constantly inform people of the speed limit through signage on our streets & highways, though this information is readily accessible. The requirement to post signage of the Youth Handgun Safety Act or to remind people of this act is not very intrusive or costly. The repeal of this requirement is supposed to save $8 million dollars over a period of 10 years. Based on 2024 statistics, there are approximately 128,690 federal firearms licensees(FFLs). Based on this information, the cost savings per year for each FFL would be approximately $6.20 per year. So, several dollars less than the cost of a six pack of beer. Based on all of the above comments, I oppose the repeal of the Youth Handgun Safety Act. Thank you.
