I SUPPORT this long overdue rule change. The engraving requirement has been an unnecessary burden to law-abiding firearms owners and is fraught with potential unintentional noncompliance if owners do not meet the somewhat arbitrary and often technically tricky depth requirements. As the ATF notes, the original manufacturers' markings meet the legal requirement, and the idea that someone is "manufacturing" a firearm by merely changing the length of the barrel or adding a stock is itself ludicrous. Mere modification of an existing firearm should not trigger a requirement to engrave potential PII information on a gun.
