Summary: The commenter opposes the proposed rule to retain firearm records for up to 60 years, arguing that the records are useless for solving crimes and serve only to create an illegal gun registry. They advocate for the immediate destruction of 4473 forms after a sale.
I vehemently disagree with this rule. There is no good reason to hold records for up to 60 years! 4473s should be destroyed immediately after sale. The time to crime for guns is over 10 years, making firearms traces useless. Of the 15k people murdered with a gun in 2025, how many of those cases were solved by a firearms trace? Retaining the 4473s doesn't serve any purpose other than to create an illegal gun registry.
