I am a Type 1 FFL operating as a gunsmith in Columbus, Indiana. The vast majority of my records are A&D from and to the same person. I see no reason that these records need to be kept for any great length of time, other than for my own business purposes. Ten (10) years would be sufficient. I also keep a dealer book for transfers to online buyers, and the rare custom purchase. Each transfer includes the NICS designation. I can understand keeping these records for traces of recovered guns to find the owner of record. Setting a time limit seems questionable for tracing purposes. I would suggest keeping the paper records in perptuity.
