I am an FFL dealer and the 4473 is far too complicated. Each transaction needs a 7 page booklet that has over 60 points that need to be filled out perfectly. We are not allowed to tell customers how to fill out the form, yet it needs to be perfect. Also certain things like county does not apply to us in the independent city of Virginia Beach. There is no county yet something needs to be put in the box to make the ATF auditor happy. The 4473 needs some serious revisions to make it easier for everyone to fill out. Get rid of questions like M1 & M2. If you answer no to M1, M2 stays blank. No customer ever reads that and its a constant battle to have them 1 line and initial the mistake. I do like the Firearm information being in the front of the document. If there is a trace and I need to go to the file, I dont want to open the book to see the Firearm information. Traces will be quicker if I can quickly look at the front of each book.
I survived an audit during the biden administration with the zero tolerance policy. I really lost confidence in the ATF during this time due to the 4473. Check boxes sound not determine if you loose your license, your livelihood or your freedom.
